Masoala Forest Lodge

Experience serenity in Madagascar.

Overview

Situated on the remote Masoala Peninsula, the Masoala Forest Lodge in Madagascar is an exquisite retreat nestled within the country’s largest remaining tract of lowland rainforest. Accessible solely by boat, this castaway haven offers seven tented rooms elevated into the tree canopy on timber decks, providing breathtaking views of the lush greenery and golden beach below. The lodge is a testament to two decades of dedication by modern-day adventurers Pierre and Maria Bester.

The Masoala Peninsula boasts unparalleled biodiversity and endemism, making it a haven for nature lovers. The lodge opens onto the warm, coral-rich waters of the Tampolo Marine Reserve, offering miles of pristine beaches and the enchanting sounds of a vibrant forest. Guests can immerse themselves in the evolutionary marvel of Madagascar, forgetting the hustle of daily life while surrounded by the gentle ocean waves and the symphony of the forest.

Reaching the Masoala Peninsula is an adventure in itself, with access only by boat or a multi-day trek. The lodge remains hidden in the coastal forest, offering an intimate and secluded experience for those seeking a remote retreat. Scheduled charter flights from the coastal town of Maroantsetra provide access to this unique paradise.

What to Expect

The Masoala Forest Lodge features seven traditional African safari tents, elevated on stilted decks within the forest canopy. The tents offer a cool breeze from the ocean or rainforest, acting as natural air conditioning. Gauze windows provide maximum airflow, creating a serene environment for guests to disconnect and enjoy the natural surroundings.

A central ‘beach house’ serves as a communal space for meals and relaxation, equipped with comfortable chairs and a well-stocked natural history library. The ‘sea deck’ overlooks the bay and is the perfect spot for breakfast and afternoon tea. The lodge embraces a variety of experiences, including kayaking, powered boat excursions to key attractions, sailing in pirogue outriggers, night walks in a private forest reserve, and interactions with the local community.

Masoala’s allure lies in its exceptional endemism and diversity. Red Ruffed Lemurs, Helmet Vangas, eight additional lemur species, the peculiar Aye-aye, the Lowland Streaked Tenrec, and over 100 bird species, including unique Ground-Rollers and Vangas, contribute to the rich tapestry of wildlife awaiting guests in this ecological haven.

Highlights

Standard Tent

Our seven rooms are traditional African safari tents, but in our case raised on stilted decks within the forest canopy and overlooking the beach. The cool breeze off the ocean or through the rainforest acts as natural air conditioning with the tents and their gauze windows oriented for maximum through drafts. Lying in bed and listening to the gentle wash of the ocean on the golden beach below, or the rustling of rainforest leaves cannot help but let you leave the frenetic energy of the city behind.

Forest Walks

Guided forest walks (primary forest and coastal / littorial forest) in search of the areas spectacular endemic wildlife are one of the primary activities.

Night Walks

Guided night walks in the coastal forest are an essential activity to see a whole host of nocturnal creatures from lemurs to amphibians and reptiles as well as birds.

Snorkelling

Several snorkelling spots up and down the coast – including one in front of the lodge – reveal a colourful marine world.

Sea Kayaking

Sea kayaking allows exploration of hidden secret coves and islands, and even mangrove rivers.

Pirogue / Canoeing

Our various pirogues, or canoes, are a great way to experience either the freshwater of the Tampolo River on a forest expedition, or the ocean offshore of camp for a sundowner cruise.
